Mystery as huge statue of Our Lady goes missing from Wicklow grotto

The statue of the Virgin Mary, which is nearly five feet in height and forms a central part of the popular Our Lady of Lourdes grotto in the Wicklow town of Kilmacanogue, was discovered missing on Monday evening.

A community has been left shocked and stunned that a life size statue of Our Lady has gone missing from a 100 year old grotto.

The statue of the Virgin Mary, which is nearly five feet in height and forms a central part of the popular Our Lady of Lourdes grotto in the Wicklow town of Kilmacanogue, was discovered missing on Monday evening.

It’s believed a number of people may have been involved in removing the large statue from its pedestal by dragging it down the very steep bank at the grotto.

The statue, which was in place at the grotto for nearly 100 years, is of huge spiritual value to the parishioners who have been left shocked and stunned at its disappearance.

Curate of Kilmacanogue Fr Hyacinth Nwakuna told this paper he was informed on Monday evening the statue of Our Lady was gone.

“I went down to the grotto and saw it for myself. It’s gone. I am very surprised and I cannot comprehend it,” Fr Nwakuna said.

“I don’t know who would take it. It’s just absolutely shocking. We are hoping we get it back in one piece,” he told this paper.

It’s high time Ireland’s Cultural sites (from all eras) have better protection.

All following a very well worn checklist.

Now who would attack “christian” monuments? It’s all so baffling…

Also, think it’s been gong on for much longer already. There might have been a topic on it on politicalirish.com but that site appears to be gone.

But Virgin Mary is highly revered by the new Mohammedans, it cannot be them

You can be 99.99% sure

Close to 10 years ago, the cross at the summit of Carrantuohill was cut down, I know someone who did the climb that day, when he left the top, the cross was standing, and he met very few people on the way down, mainly locals, a few tourists, he’s pretty sure which AH cut the down the cross
