Transport yourself back to the year 1980. You’re 25 years old and having a drink with a friend. You mention to him that you’re keen to get a foot on the property ladder. He looks puzzled. “That’s an interesting way of putting it,” he says. “I’ve never heard that phrase before.” He wouldn’t have heard it. The first time “property ladder” appeared in the Times newspaper was the next year, 1981.

Getting a foot on the property board would be more apt with the game being a hybrid of Monopoly and Snakes and Ladders. Oh and even if you refuse to make a move and remain on one square the ladders and snakes move around anyway, so you’re still not safe.
