A leading epidemiologist says Australians will need a third and even a fourth dose of a COVID-19 vaccine as the country enters the next phase of the pandemic.
The warning comes despite more than 80 per cent of people aged 16 and over being fully vaccinated with two doses.
Experts have warned being fully vaccinated may not be good enough next year as iterations of the virus inevitably emerge and some freedoms, such as entry into certain countries may require proof of additional doses.

ABC12 Michigan reported last week that an entire school district had to close down for a day because of adverse COVID-19 booster reactions. Saginaw Township Community Schools were left totally inundated with few teachers available to work. The official headline uses âstaff shortageâ to explain the school districtâs one-day closure, but the local stationâs newscasters clarify that widespread adverse reactions to COVID-19 boosters actually led to the shortage.
A massive proportion of the schoolâs staff had an adverse reaction that left them unable to work, and an ongoing substitute teacher shortage made things even trickier for the district. Watch ABC12âs report:

People urged to get booster vaccine in âtimely mannerâ
The Taoiseach is urging people to get their booster vaccines âin a timely mannerâ after what he said is âsome evidenceâ that people are missing their appointments.
Details of booster vaccination programme announced
Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has announced the extension of the Covid-19 booster vaccination programme following recommendations made by the National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
NIAC has recommended that a booster dose of an mRNA vaccine now be offered to:
All those aged 16-59 years who have an underlying condition
All residents in long-term healthcare facilities, irrespective of age
All those aged 50 to 59 years who have completed their primary course with any Covid-19 vaccine
As per previous booster dose recommendations, the additional dose will be given at least five months following completion of the primary vaccination schedule

If a person in a group for whom a booster dose is recommended has had laboratory confirmed Covid-19 infection after a completed primary vaccine course (a breakthrough infection), the booster dose should be delayed for at least six months after the Covid-19 infection was diagnosed.

If the booster programme gives a lot of protection this winter, the strategy for the following winter is maybe to boost people where there is waning immunity. That might not be enough to control case numbers, but it might be enough to control the translation of case numbers into hospitalisations and ICUs.
