Ghost Towns: Enniscorthy - Becoming Ireland's Detroit?

From a thread over at

Apparently people from the area have always shopped in nearby towns like Waterford, Wexford and Carlow as
there isn’t the range of goods in Enniscorthy so it isn’t fair to blame the recent downturn entirely.
And also that great socialist scheme - The Celtic Tiger - didn’t call to the town.

However, rents are as high/higher in Enniscorthy (pop 9’000) as Wexford (pop 18’000).

The town seems to have a severe leadership problem.

The coming recession won’t do this town any favors.

I wonder what is will look like in five years.

I was in Wexford recently for the first time in three years. Couldn’t get over the changes. The vastly expensive refurbishment of White’s Hotel (c. 52million with many subcontractors apparently left unpaid), Greenacres’ lavish new pricey wine emporium cum exhibition centre, the ritzy quayside apartment development Key West, massive pedestrianisation, the new Opera House. Just amazing what borrowed money will get you.

Restaurants and shops were dead quiet in spite of the Wexford Festival.

Never been there, but I seriously doubt it’s going to become Ireland’s Detroit.

Yea for a start does it even have any BIG INDUSTRY :unamused:

   instigated by those great socialists in FF and de buildin trade…

Enniscorthy- Irelands detroit

Haven’t been there in years, but last time I was there it was a beautiful town. One of the prettiest biggish towns in Ireland.

That could have been filmed very early in the morning before people got up! i.e about 9:30am!

reading the replies on youtube the person who filmed it said they did it early on a Sunday Morning.

Enniscorthy Trying to Be Venice

This attempt at being Venice would explain quite a lot , non??
