Government cannot bank on venture capitalists

There is no way a venture capital firm would invest in an Irish bank; they don’t have the scale and their mandates would not allow it. VCs can invest in early stage (often tech-driven) companies, not long-established ones. Patrick Honohan may be confusing VC funds with buy out funds (such as Blackstone, KKR, Carlyle, etc), which provide a distinctly different type of private equity. A professor of international financial economics should know better.
