Following its success in winning an urban design award in America, the Grangegorman Development Agency (GDA), the organisation behind the proposed revamp of the massive site housing the former mental hospital in Dublin’s north inner-city, is equally chuffed to have been shortlisted for one of the top awards at the World Architecture Festival held in Barcelona. In truth, entering competitions is all that Grangegorman has to look forward to these days.

The plan to create a “vibrant new city quarter” housing healthcare facilities and a new urban campus for the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) across its 74 acres was dead on arrival. The carcass of this edifice is starting to stink the place out, however, because Batt O’Keeffe, the minister with responsibility for the agency, hasn’t got the bottle to bury it.

The GDA, in case you haven’t guessed, is a quango, one of 800 or so that have been clamped onto the state sector where, like leeches, they suck money from the public purse.

Gerry Murphy (Late of the GDA) is now CEO of the Dublin Transport Authority and another lad with an affiliation to the GDA,John Fitzgerald is now Chairperson of the DTA.

Given that the CIE Broadstone complex abuts the Grangegorman “Campus” and that CIE were not exactly falling over themselves to voluntarily give it all up to the GDA it is not at all surprising that the new sexy DTA now has two ex GDA men at the helm…Bobby Fischer vs Boris Spassky had nothin on Noel Dempsey vs John Lynch
