Knock Airport starts E46m expansion

Knock Airport today said work has begun on a E5.5m extension to its main terminal as part of a E46m capital investment programme.

The extension, the contract of which has been awarded to John Sisk and Sons, is part of Ireland West Airport Knock’s Vision 2020 which plans to see expansion of its short, medium and long haul international air routes and growing annual passenger numbers to over two million by 2020.
In 2007, the Airport was given a financial injection of E27.1m in funding under the new Capital Expenditure Grant Scheme for Regional Airports, which marked the single largest investment ever in the Airport’s history.

“Ireland West Airport Knock’s terminal expansion is needed to provide the expanded space and services required due to the increased range of scheduled and charter routes and the resultant rapid growth in passenger numbers that the Airport has experienced in the last five years,” it said.

Growth figures for the first five months of 2008 showed an increase of 26pc, it added.
