The elderly and people with disabilities are being seriously affected by the lack of funding for housing grant schemes in County Limerick, according to Cllr Liam Galvin.
Speaking at a recent County Council meeting he called on the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government to urgently increase the funding for housing grant schemes as “many applications are going in and then people are being told that there is no money available”.
“I’m asking that the minister gives us the funding to meet the needs of the people of Limerick. It’s disgraceful,” he added.
Cllr Patrick O’Donovan said that he found the situation “very disappointing”.
Seconding the motion, Cllr Kevin Sheahan said that the electronic voting machines should be sold for scrap metal and that would go some way to helping this scheme.
“These machines will never be used and they are costing a fortune to store, that’s waste. I also think we should get this motion circulated to all authorities in the country” he added.
A spokesperson for Limerick County Council said that the Department had written to the Council stating that a review into the countrywide spend on housing grant schemes will be made later this year.
“A complete lack of foresight,” was Cllr John Sheahan’s reaction to this.
