A huge deficit and a falling population threaten to push the country back into the dark days of deflation, and leaders are willing to attempt anything – even failed British ideas.

On the fifth floor of Tokyo’s grey Ministry for Economy Trade & Industry (METI) building is a small corner of cool. Here, seven civil servants are working away in an attempt to boost exports of Japanese culture – from videogames and comics to fashion.

“Cool Japan” is how Kaname Tajima, vice minister at METI, dubs the initiative. He even has a poster on the wall of his otherwise very traditional ministry office bearing the slogan. After two lost decades, Japan’s politicians are prepared to attempt anything as they desperately try to avoid plunging back into a period of deflation – even failed British ideas.
