In a big palaver last year Mary Hanafin announced that school buildings nationwide were going to get put on a public list and then work their way up that list .

The following were approved for funding to start planning their extensions in 2007 .

This year we hear that Mary Hanafin has called These plans OFF (no money you see) and that these schools ( all rather full of course) will get nothing …maybe ever.

2 Projects survived out of 7 . I make it that 28% of Galway projects survived.

She also abolished the “summer works scheme” worth €100m a year. This allowed funds for toilets to be brought up from 1960s standards and installed lifts and ramps for disabled kids .

The full list of 56 schools announced last year is here . I strongly advise you , if affected, to make sure Mary Hanafin has signed the cheque and that the school has cashed it …seeing as she has cut her capital budget by 70% from what we can see in Galway .

If she hacked your overcrowded local school off the funding list then ask her why . minister@education.gov.ie should get to her.

Anyone know how many of those schools could have stayed on the list if the ministers hadn’t taken their huge pay rises, and the years of higher pensions that go with them.

Apparently all the new tax credits info comes with a lovely little guide encouraging people to take advantage of all their credits, not good timing when you think about it!!! :stuck_out_tongue:

With the population expected to grow by a million over the next few years shouldn’t the government be increasing expenditure on infrastructure across the board, new schools, hospitals, airports etc. etc.? I don’t understand? :open_mouth:

I do.

Mary Hanafin has been instructed to rapidly pull 100s of Millions of capital expenditure this year because the government will not have that money and knows it.

Its called a credit crunch .

Hey Pack!

I don’t know how reliable my source is, but an Aran islander was telling me about the primary school on Inis Meain recently having an extension completed. The kicker is though, that the school is due to be shut down in three years anyway :confused:
