It would be terrible to look back in a year or two and wonder why we didn’t shout stop. It would be terrible if we realised too late that we sleepwalked over the edge of a cliff just because not one of us woke the rest of us up. It would be terrible to think that it might emerge in a year or two, when it is too late, that all of us were privately unhappy about the Anglo bailout, but we were too cowed to speak out because we thought everyone else was happy to go along.

It can seem as if things just happen in this country these days, regardless of what the public thinks. They allow us to vent our spleen and then they go ahead and do what they want to do anyway.

Sometimes, you get the impression they don’t even want to hear people’s opinions on anything. They just want to be left alone to do whatever it is they want to do next – whether it be a bank guarantee or the Anglo bailout.

It is too late Aengus. The time to shout stop was around 2003. What’s this you were writing then?
