Chris Christie delivered a stark message on February 24, 2010 to about 200 mayors at the Statehouse on Wednesday morning. He warned them that they can expect a cut in state aid to municipalities in the Fiscal Year 2011 budget he will unveil next month. “The day of reckoning” has arrived, the Governor said, referring to what he called a decade’s worth of poor fiscal management of state government.

He spoke at 10:30 am to a group of mayors assembled by the New Jersey League of Municipalities. Speaking extemporaneously, Christie gathered steam as he told the mayors he was merely doing “what the people sent me here to do.” And he offered a colorful analogy to the classic movie “Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid,” wherein the heroes are racing toward a cliff pursued by armed enemies and decide to jump off together. “That’s what we should do,” he told the mayors, stressing the “togetherness” theme.
