Safest bank for deposits?

Hi Everyone,
Apologies if this is the wrong forum to post in (if it is, perhaps a mod could move it for me).

My father who lost his shirt on property investments during the crash has just had much needed reversal of fortune. He invested in penny stocks over a decade ago and has just discovered they are now worth about over €150K.

He’s concerned about putting them into any Irish bank because guarantees mean nothing in the current climate. Is it true that Rabobank, the old reliable, is also under threat because of it’s exposure to a possible default by Spain? I’m no finance expert so I could be way out on this. I’ve also heard people suggest the UK banks are safer, is this true?

Which banks do you guys believe are the safest and most secure in the current climate for such a deposit for an Irish depositer (pre-budget December 2010)?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
