Tent cities have sprung up outside Los Angeles as people lose their homes in the mortgage crisis.
That is scary and I think the similarities with the great depression is uncanny. (Remember tent city outside the white house in the 30’s!)
This photo was from a tent city as well…
I have just finished The Grapes of Wrath which tells the story of a family moving out West in the depression and ending up in the Tent Cities. A fantastic read and one that highlights how grim life is living on the margins of society. In the US there is no safety net
So will we expect to see these “shanty towns” spring up on the outskirts of the pale in the not too distant future?
I read recently where homeless people availing of free soup and accommodation from Irish charities has soared recently.
